David Gordon Hughes was born and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Although receiving no formal artistic training in his youth, he was greatly influenced by the early 20th Century European and Irish artists. He drew inspiration from artists such as Van Gogh, Monet and Renoir and gradually his self-taught techniques developed to where, encouraged by the art community and gallery owners, he felt confident showing his work. His unique style met with immediate acclaim.
This unique style that sets Hughes apart is the way he lays down color on the canvas. The subject and composition of his paintings play a secondary role to mood, atmosphere, texture and layers of color; all of which is built on a foundation of gold leaf that glimmers through the paint. This gives his paintings a richness and depth that is found in few others.
For their 4th Annual Irish Exhibition in March 2014, Alan Barnes Fine Art hosted a one-man showcase of David Gordon Hughes, featuring landscapes of Ireland.
Hughes work is exclusively represented in the United States by Alan Barnes Fine Art in Dallas.
