George Clare was a 19th Century British painter of still lifes. He exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and the Society of British Artists at Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the British Institution, which was established as a rival to the Royal Academy and was located at Boydell’s Shakespeare Gallery in Pall Mall, London. George Clare’s works were very much influenced by the small detailed studies of William Henry Hunt and were frequently painted in pairs, one work depicting fruit, the other flowers. He was the father of Oliver and Vincent Clare, who continued his legacy in the fine craftsmanship of still life painting. Exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1864, 1866 and 1867, and also at the British Institute and at Suffolk Street.
