Biography of Jan Van Campenhout ( 1907 - 1972, Belgian )

Jan Van Campenhout (also referred to as Jean Van Campenhout, and sometimes misspelled as Campenhaut) was a Belgian figurative painter born in Aalst on December 16, 1907. He lived and worked primarily in Ostend during the 1950s and 1960s, where he frequently exhibited at the local art deco cafe “La Coupole.” His work, often compared to that of fellow Belgian artist Jacques Callaert, focused on a variety of subjects, including animated cityscapes such as “Boulevard animated under the rain” and “Alley in Montmartre by evening light,” landscapes like “dunes At Kalmthout,” and interior scenes including “Artist’s studio” and “Galadiner.” In addition to his paintings, he produced graphic works, publishing an album of pen drawings titled “Historical Monuments & Buildings.” Van Campenhout passed away on April 19, 1972, in Snaaskerke, Belgium.
