Biography of Armand Marie Guerin ( 1913-1983, French )

Armand Marie Guérin (1913-1983) was a French naïve school painter celebrated for his lively, spontaneous depictions of Parisian street scenes and landmarks. Born into a family of artists, he adopted the surname Guérin to distinguish his unaffected style from the more traditional work of his father, Vincent Manago, and his brother, Dominique Manago. Despite receiving a classical education at the prestigious École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Jean-Pierre Laurens, he developed a unique artistic approach characterized by a charming simplicity often described as “childlike.” This aligned him with the French naïve school, which includes artists like Henri Rousseau. His work is defined by its focus on scenes of his native Paris, capturing views of locations such as the Île Saint-Louis, the Eiffel Tower, Place de la Concorde, and Montmartre across various seasons.
