Born in 1908, Charles Merangel would become a noted painter in oils, watercolors and gouache. Stylistically he can be considered a pure devotee of Cubism. His paintings, usually on a smaller scale, are handled with a deft attention to detail and clever use of color. His easel painting was an important part of his life but he is probably better remembered today for his film work. From the late 1950s he gained a repurtation as a talented set decorator and production designer. His set decoration credits include Last Year at Marienbad (1961), The Widow Couderc (1971), Happiness (1965), among others.
He is also credited in the art department, as set decorator, and as production designer, on French Connection II, The Burglars, La Veuve Couderc, Zazie dans le Métro, A View From the Bridge and many others.
Charles Merangel died in 1993.
