Abattucci usually painted bright open landscapes bathed in warm light,
but in this wonderful example of his work he has with a far more moody
palette. Dating to around 1910, Abattucci shows us a quiet landscape in early
morning. Working during the period 1900-1930, his paintings are consistently
of a high standard. Born in Sint-Jans Molenbeek in 1871, Pierre Abattucci
studied art at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Brussels before transferring to
the Brussels Academy. Here, under the tutelage of Portaels and Stallaert he
became a talented painter in the Neo-Impressionist manner. Upon his
graduation he traveled to Italy remaining there for a few months before
returning to Belgium and settling in his hometown. Here he taught at the
Academy of Sint-Jans Molenbeek and became a member of the prestigious
Belgian Aquafortists Association.
An exhibitor at the World’s Fair of 1910, his paintings today can be
seen in the museums of Mons, and Ixelles as well as at the Charlier and Saint-
Josse Museums in Brussels.
