Aime Stevens

1879-1951, Belgian

Aime Stevens was born in Schaerbeek, a suburb of Brussels, in 1879.  As a young man of sixteen years of age he enrolled at the Academy of Brussels to study painting.  He remained here for seven years receiving instruction from Jan Stallaert and Joseph Quinaux who both proved enormous influences on his later style.  Graduating in 1902 he established a studio in Brussels and commenced painting the figure subjects for which he is remembered.  He also produced a significant quantity of drawings and engravings which show him to have been an artist of great talent and vision.  In 1903 when still only 24 years of age, he was offered a teaching post at his Alma Mater which was a tremendous honor for one so young.  He remained at the Academy, eventually reaching the position of Head Professor, until 1949.  After a long and highly successful career as both a painter and as a mentor to numerous young artists, Aime Stevens died in Brussels in 1951.
