There is some confusion surrounding the Godchaux family of artists, but it appears that Alfred was the patriarch of the family. He painted many French rural landscapes and in addition some more exotic views of Venice and Constantinople. As the signatures are similar, works by his son Emile (b.1860) are sometimes misattributed.
Alfred Godchaux was born in Paris on the Île de la Cité on January 24, 1835. It seems likely that the painters, Roger Godchaux (1878-1955) and Henri Godchaux (1881-1919) were also part of the same family and probably further sons of Alfred.
